Irish Poker Drinking Game: What to Expect

This week’s featured drinking game is a flexible, easily learned game that works great for small and large groups.  Irish Poker is a perfect game for pre-games; each round is usually pretty quick, rules are very simple, and there can be a lot of drinking involved if that’s what you are looking for!  Irish Poker is fairly similar to Riding this Bus; it is basically a more group-oriented, quicker, and easier version.  Anyways, no time to waste! Grab some friends and beers and let’s get to it!

What you need:

  • Deck of Cards
  • Drink of choice for participants (beer is the usual)
  • 2+ players

Set it Up!

A kind player will volunteer as dealer.  The dealer will shuffle the cards and deal out four face-down cards to each player.  Players are NOT allowed to look at their cards. The dealer will then deal two rows of cards at the center of the table or floor.  The first row will have 5 face-down cards, and the row below it will have four face-down cards.  Players are NOT allowed to look at the values of these cards. Irish Poker Set-Up

Round by Round!

With the four cards they have been dealt, players will take turns going through each of four rounds of gameplay.  The player to the left of the dealer will start the first round.

1st Card: Red or Black?

The starting player will announce whether he thinks his first card is red or black.  He will then flip the card over to reveal its color.  If his guess was correct, he will give out two drinks.  If he was wrong, he will take two drinks.  He will hold onto the card. Once he is done, the next player in the circle will repeat this process with his first card.  Once all players have taken a turn and flipped their first cards, the starting player will begin the second round.

2nd Card: Higher or Lower?

The starting player announces whether he thinks his second card will be higher or lower than his first card.  He will then flip the card over.  If his guess was correct, he will give out four drinks.  If he was wrong (same card is considered wrong as well), he will take four drinks.  He will hold onto the card. Once he is done, the next player in the circle will repeat this process with his second card.  Once all players have taken a turn and flipped their second cards, the starting player will begin the third round.

3rd Card: Inside or Outside?

The starting player announces whether he thinks his third card will be inside or outside of his first two cards and flips the third card over to reveal it.  (For example, if he has a 5 and a 7, he will most likely say “outside”.  If the third card is a 5-7, he will be incorrect.  If the third card is anything but a 5-7, he will be correct).  If he is correct, he gives out 6 drinks. If he is incorrect, he must take 6 drinks. He will hold onto the card. Once he is done, the next player in the circle will repeat this process with his third card.  Once all players have taken a turn and flipped their third cards, the starting player will begin the fourth and final round.

4th Card: Suit?

The starting player will announce which suit he thinks his fourth card is. He then flips the fourth card over.  If correct, he gives out 8 drinks.  If incorrect, he must take 8 drinks. This is repeated with each participant until all have flipped all four of their cards.  Each player should have his four face-up cards on display in front of him.

Flip, Assign, Drink!

Remember those cards the dealer dealt in the center of the table?  Time to have some fun with them! The top row (row of 5) represents “Take” cards.  The bottom row (row of 4) represents “Give” Cards.  *Please note drinks assigned from the “Give” cards can be split up and assigned to multiple players.  The dealer will begin by flipping over the first card in the row of 5.  Anyone who has this card must take 2 drinks for each copy of it they have!  Once all players have drank for the card if necessary, the dealer will flip over the first card in the “Give” row.  Anyone who has this card can give out 2 drinks for each copy of it they have!  Once all drinks are assigned, the dealer switches back to the “Take” row and flips over the second card in the row.  Players with this card must take 4 drinks.  The dealer then flips over the second “Give” card.  Players with this card can assign 4 drinks to another player. Once all drinks are assigned, the dealer switches back to the “Take” row and flips over the third card in the row.  Players with this card must take 6 drinks.  The dealer then flips over the third “Give” card.  Players with this card can assign 6 drinks to another player. Once all drinks are assigned, the dealer switches back to the “Take” row and flips over the fourth card in the row.  Players with this card must take (you guessed it!) 8 drinks.  The dealer then flips over the fourth and final “Give” card.  Players with this card can assign 8 drinks to another player.  Finally, we have the fifth and last “Take” card!  The dealer will flip this card over, and….. *DRUMROLL*….Anyone who has this card must drink an entire beer for it on the spot!

Alternate Version for the Dedicated Drinkers

Not enough drinking involved for your liking?  Play the game exactly the same until the center cards are flipped.  Instead of using 2, 4, 6, & 8 for the drink values, take and give drinks for face-value of the cards flipped!  Treat the final card the same (as a full beer).

If this STILL isn’t enough for you, you can give/take drinks during the first half of the game as face-value as well.  This would be pretty intense!  If other players want to play at face value and you are not up for it, don’t be afraid to take small drinks!  You determine the size of your drinks regardless of which rule set you decide to use.

Try it Out!

That’s all there is to Irish Poker! Give it a try!  This one can be a lot of fun regardless of whether it’s just you and your bestie or a big group!
